Chrysler’s versatile front-wheel-drive K Platform debuted for the 1981 model year, and all manner of sedan, minivan, sports coupe, pickup, wagon — in fact, the overwhelming majority of all Chrysler cars sold through well into the early 1990s — sprang forth from the K Family Tree. The 1985-1989 Lancer was the Dodge sibling of the Chrysler LeBaron GTS, and should not to be confused with either the early-1960s Plymouth Valiant-based Lancer or the various Mitsubishi Lancers sold since 1973 (to make these identification matters more difficult, Chrysler sold Mitsubishi Lancers badged as Colts and Arrows in the United States).

Speaking of the Lancer Turbo’s hood, that scoop actually provided cold air to the engine’s air intake (unlike most vents and scoops found on car hoods of this era).
The 2.2-liter turbocharged engine in the ’86 Lancer made 146 horsepower, which was decent power for a 2,610-pound car in 1986. A Shelby version with 175 horses came in 1989.

This car came with a healthy serving of options, including this auto-reverse cassette deck. The MSRP on a 1986 Lancer Sport Hatch started at $9,426, which comes to just over $22,000 in 2019 dollars. Walk into the BMW dealership across the street, and the very cheapest 3-Series (a 325 with a mere 121 horsepower) started at a breathtaking $19,560 ($45,800 today). Apples and oranges, sure, but the Lancer did offer a lot of power per buck.
